Description
This creamy cheddar cheese sauce is perfect for drizzling over vegetables, pasta, or nachos.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Pinch cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbling but not browned.
- Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook for 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Lower heat to medium-low. Add cheddar cheese gradually, stirring constantly until smooth.
- Stir in salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne or hot sauce (if using).
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Serve immediately or keep warm in a fondue pot or slow cooker.
Notes
- This sauce can be made ahead and reheated over low heat, adding a splash of milk if it thickens too much.
- Feel free to experiment with different cheeses for unique flavors.
