Description

This creamy cheddar cheese sauce is perfect for drizzling over vegetables, pasta, or nachos.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbling but not browned.
  3. Gradually add the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook for 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Lower heat to medium-low. Add cheddar cheese gradually, stirring constantly until smooth.
  5. Stir in salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne or hot sauce (if using).
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  7. Serve immediately or keep warm in a fondue pot or slow cooker.

Notes

  • This sauce can be made ahead and reheated over low heat, adding a splash of milk if it thickens too much.
  • Feel free to experiment with different cheeses for unique flavors.
